ABOUT THIS WEBSITE

THE SINGLE CYLINDER ENGINE TOSCA

This website has been set up to show those who are interested in model steam engines how to build two unique engines "Tosca" and "Jessie".

I have designed these engines as an affordable alternative to the light tinny engines sold by some firms and the very expensive models offered by others

The plans to build these engines are very detailed and each set is fully illustrated with photographs and diagrams with a full description of the method for making each component.

To build these engines you will need a lathe and a pillar drill. All screwthreads are metric and metric taps and dies of sizes M6 coarse and M8 fine are all that you will need. You can if you wish use BA or some other thread system and modify the tapping hole sizes to suit. The usual workshop equipment, a vice, files hacksaws etc. will of course also be needed.

If you have never attempted a job like this before then you would be best to attempt to build the single cylinder engine "Tosca" first. If you have basic turning and other metalwork skills then you should be up to the task. I have included some web pages on metalworking tips to help.

When writing the plans I have assumed that some of the skills required may not be familiar to some and I have gone into great detail to describe them using photographs and diagrams. I have also recommended some books to help those who need to polish up their skills in certain areas.
